Ugly Bedroom Set

Ugly Bedroom Set

transform your bedroom from matchy matchy to a beautifully curated retreat

It all started with a struggle…

When we moved into our first home, I felt thrilled and full of pride yet also overwhelmed with decorating a blank slate.  It was time for the hand-me-down college era furniture to go, yet I wasn't sure what to replace it with.  I wanted a beautiful bedroom but didn't know where to start.  Out of overwhelm, I went to the nearest furniture store and bought a matching bedroom set: bed, dressers, nightstands… the whole shebang.

It was a simple solution at the time but a couple of years later my bedroom looked like it was straight out of the JC Penney's catalog.  It looked dated, boring, and frankly kind of ugly.  Not exactly the retreat that I craved.

To add insult to injury, I began to see articles popping up all over about how the number one mistake most people make with decorating is 'buying matchy-matchy'.  This turns out to be one of the top complaints of interior decorators too.  I felt stupid and it solidified in my head that I just wasn't born with the 'decorating gene'.

Choosing the simplest solution turned out to be the least attractive over time.

Goodbye Matchy-Matchy, Hello Interesting and Beautiful

This plan was created to transform my 'matchy-matchy' mistake into a learning experience.  By implementing these changes I am transforming a room that looks dated and ugly into beautiful space with a layered and curated look that all the professionals talk about.

A layered and curated master bedroom.

I feel invigorated and proud that I could turn this around for myself and truly work towards building a space that I love.  You can feel this way too.

Use this guide to transform your master bedroom from matchy-matchy to layered and curated.  Let's not wallow any longer in our design-mistake making ways.  It's time to turn things around and fix this problem once and for all!

To do this, we are not going to make rushed and uneducated decisions.  That's what got us into this mess in the first place, isn't it?  We are going to educate ourselves and make intentional, methodical choices.

So, here's the plan.

Step 1 – Time & Money

Determine roughly how much time and money you have to commit to this project.  If you want it done in a month from now, that's totally achievable.  If you need to spread things out, that's a solid plan too.  Just make a plan, commit to it, and write it down to solidify it.  Knowing this information up front will guide you when making decisions about how much to spend on new pieces.

Step 2 – How Much Do You Love It?

Ask yourself the following questions to determine what direction we are going to head in:

Question 1: Do you still love the look of your bedroom set but just aren't crazy about how much it all matches?  Would you prefer to work with elements of what you already have?  Good news!  You're one step closer to a beautiful bedroom than the rest of us!  Pick 1-2 main pieces from the set and let's design around them.  Which one piece would you keep?  In most cases, picking a larger item like a bed and maybe a dresser would be a good place to start. Imagine your room with just those pieces in it and we will build from there.

Question 2 :  Ready to say adios to the whole set and start from scratch?  We're going to tackle the main focal point of the room, the bed !  A bed can be as simple as a fabric headboard with a frame all the way up to a full sleigh or canopy.

Here are some specific questions to dig deeper into:

  • What does your ideal bed look like?
  • What style is it?
  • What material: fabric or wood or metal?

Selecting a bed will be your first task.

Bonus Tip: Do not allow yourself to become distracted with other elements for your room at this point.  We are focusing on only one thing right now: the bed.  Have you ever heard of the Paradox of Choice?  By systematically reducing the amount of choices available we are psychologically tricking our brains to reduce anxiety and overwhelm about making a decision.  Sound good?  Start with one choice.

Step 3 – Let's Make a List

After figuring out what we are doing with the bed, make a list of all the furniture pieces that you need.  Don't just replace one item with the next, imagine your room completely empty and begin to slowly add back in furniture pieces starting with your bed.  Do you need nightstands?  1 or 2?  How about a dresser? 1 or 2?  Do you have space restrictions as you start adding more pieces in?  Finalize a list of furniture that needs to be replaced. Some typical examples to pick from: nightstands, dressers (tall or low) and seating (bench, chair).

Bonus Tip: Feeling guilty about getting rid of all this furniture?  Think about breaking up nightstands or dressers into other rooms.  Nightstand can sometimes be used in other bedrooms or in living spaces as end tables.   Dressers can also be used as media stands or console tables.  Get creative!

Step 4 – Evaluate Your Style

Let's talk about furniture style.  Now that you have a bed that you love, let's build on it.  What style is the bed?  What material is it made of?  If it is wood, what finish?  Make note of these elements because you will work with them to pull together similar elements with the remaining furniture selection.

Step 5 – Pick New Items

Go through your list of support furniture and select items one by one.  Forget about rugs, lighting, bedding or wall decor at this point, remember the Paradox of Choice!  Just like when building a house, the foundation comes first.  Search for curated support pieces in the same style family or similar color family.  As we start to add elements back into the room the goal is to have them add to the look, not take away from it or compete with it.  Think 'complement not contrast'.  Always be aware of the foundation piece that you are trying to coordinate with.

Here are some general rules to help as you move through this:

  • Feel free to match wood in your room: support pieces can be in the same finish as the bed but a different style.
  • Added in furniture should be in the same color pallette
  • As a general rule of thumb, a room can contain 2-3 different types of wood tones but draw the line at 2 different types of wood in a smaller room.  Black and white are considered neutral so they don't need to be figured into your wood tone count.
  • If your brain likes symmetry (mine sure does) then select two of the same nightstands to create balance.

Create a new Pinterest folder and call it 'Master Bedroom Project'. Use Pinterest as a visual bucket to place inspiration while you are browsing through options.  Once you make a selection on a piece delete the other pinned options, this will allow you to get clearer on your vision as you make your way through decisions.  You can use Pinterest as a visual design board our you can create one outside of Pinterest (see this post here for how to do that).

Step 6 – Add in Layers

Now it's time to start decorating!  Once your design board has been set with your furniture you will start to see patterns, colors, and textures emerging.  This is a good time to solidify a color pallette.  Unless you are planning on repainting your room, the color of your walls should set the stage for the base of your color pallette.  From there, add two more colors.  One color can be a primary color and the other can be an accent color.  Repeat the colors throughout the room to make it feel cohesive and calming.

Move through the following list to select the final pieces:

Fixtures:

  • Overhead light fixture
  • Table lamps

Soft Goods:

  • Area rugs
    • Bonus Tip :  pick a rug that is two shades lighter or darker than the finish of your bed.  This will set off the bed as the focal point of the room.
  • Bedding, throw blankets and accent pillows

Finishing Touches:

  • Wall decor or art work
  • Potted plants
  • Vignettes and table top decor

Layer in your furnishings on top of your furniture and you have arrived!

Final Note : Don't have the funds to replace everything at once?  Identify a replacement plan with budgets and timelines.  It's absolutely ok to let a room evolve over time.  If you have the patience or your budget requires it, take the time to select your major pieces (bed, dresser) and work your way through creating a design board.  The key is to create a grand vision of the space and then execute over time.

Follow these guidelines and you'll have a beautiful master bedroom that looks much more thought out, original and unique to you.  Although you may choose to install it all in one day it will look like it was collected over time.

Don't continue to live in a bedroom that leaves you uninspired.  Let's transform our regrets into lessons and take our bedrooms from match-matchy to beautiful and coordinated!
